I started knitting this shortly after we found out I was pregnant with Iris. Knowing how long it was likely to take me, I chose the largest size the pattern offered (12 months). The day before she was born, I finished the knitting and tucked the pieces into my knitting bag, not to be seen again until a couple of weekends ago, when I finally got up the nerve (and had time) to tackle the seams. Ingrid and I chose and sewed on the buttons during Iris's morning nap today, the day after her six-month birthday. It fits, but barely. Better late than never, right?
I know you can't see much of the sweater here, but isn't she a peach?
For you knitters: This is the Harvey Kimono from that Natural Knits for Moms and Babies book. I followed the pattern exactly, even using the same yarn they did. Any clue why the sleeves came out long enough for a baby chimpanzee? Damned if I am going to do anything about it at this point other than roll them up, but it'd be nice to know for next time.

ReplyDeleteI haven't picked up my knitting needles in awhile, but back in the day I used to knit here and there and often found I had to adjust patterns to fit the way I wanted them to.
Adorable! I have not been brave enough to knit clothes for my kids yet.

ReplyDeleteYour baby is entirely too adorable and the sweater is impressive. In my experience, all baby sweaters hand-knit have too-long arms.

ReplyDeleteI can't believe that's your first sweater. That picture looks like one of the ones they use in the knitting books - the ones that make me want to knit the sweater until I realize that it's really the cute baby that's drawing me in.
Ohhh Caro that is the sweetest sweater and the sweetest Iris. Kate & Rachel, two artists with a studio across the atrium from my painting studio, hand dye luxury wool. I think you can find their site, they're called Spincycle and they're advertised in BUST magazine too. Anyway, if you want to knit more for the girls or for yourself, I'd love to provide the wool. You should not be limited to Spincycle yarn but I have no desire to knit. Want me to bring a NW yarn bundle with me on my flight from Seattle????? This post is so inspiring....for me to see you knit more! :)
